Gmail Gets Materialized in Lollipop

Gmail-5-AH-1

Today our Nexus 9 and Nexus Player reviews went live. And now here comes the new version of Gmail. This is version 5.0 and it is all Material Design and stuff. We have a video below showing how it looks and works on the Nexus 9. But in the screenshots below you’ll be able to see how it looks on the Nexus 6. And damn does it look good. Especially with the tinted status bar. On the Nexus 9, it looks a lot like the iPad version of Gmail, Yes I am an iPad user (although I haven’t touched it since I got the Nexus 9).

More or less everything works and acts the same here. But we do have a brand new icon. Also the slideout drawer is a bit different compared to the previous version. It looks a bit like the Photos app actually. You can also add more accounts to the Gmail app. This includes Yahoo, Outlook, AOL, Microsoft Exchange, and obviously more Gmail accounts. That’s something you couldn’t do before and why we had a general email app on our devices. So it’s nice to see that we’ve got all that into one app. Although the email app is still around, if you really want to keep your email addresses separate.

Gmail 5.0 should already be available to download, but if not it’ll be available with Android 5.0 Lollipop when those OTAs start rolling out over the next week or so. You’ll want to stay tuned for that though. It’s definitely a much needed update to the app, and now has me wondering which should I use, Inbox or Gmail. I’ll probably go back to Gmail at least for a little bit. What about the rest of you?

What do all of you think about this update for Gmail? Let us know in the comments down below.
