Tizen 3.0 Gets Announced At Tizen Developer Summit In China

Tizen is Samsung’s operating system based on Linux, it’s currently used mostly to run Samsung’s smartwatch offerings, the likes of Gear 2, Gear Fit… even the Galaxy Gear (previously on Android) got the Tizen OS update. This Korean company plans to sell Tizen smartphones as well which have been delayed many times now. Samsung finally unveiled Samsung Z, which is company’s first Tizen-powered smartphone. This device will start selling in Russia soon with Yandex as the default search engine. Samsung plans to do a year-long promotion of Tizen in order to get developers on board and have more apps to offer as part of this OS, that could be the main reason this device is launching in Russia and not worldwide and why Samsung delayed its launch so many times before.

Either way, we’re not here to talk about Samsung Z, but the Tizen alliance Developer Summit which took place in China for the first time. The main thing that was announced there is Tizen 3.0 which will be launched at the end of this year, Samsung Z might even sell with Tizen 3.0 on board, though I’m just guessing. This new version of Samsung’s OS will offer support for car entertainment systems along with many bug fixes and small improvements all around. Vice President of Samsung Electronics was there along with Tizen’s Hyogun Lee. Samsung really has big plans for this platform and plans to use them in basically everything, from smart TVs and smartphones to smart furniture, mobile terminals etc. It basically sounds like Samsung will implement Tizen into everything in the future and that is very likely in fact. Hardware manufacturers didn’t appear at this event though, we did however see lots of Samsung’s Tizen partners over there though, the representatives of Baidu, Tencent, Alibaba, etc.

It is obvious at this point what Samsung plans for this OS, it wants it to become something similar to Android. Samsung always had a huge appetite, so no wonder they want to release their own OS. You might recall Bada OS which was launched years ago, that didn’t go all too well for Samsung, but Tizen is a completely different story. Considering Samsung’s resources and marketing capabilities, this OS could really take off. Thoughts?
