Friday was a very big day in the android calendar. In fact, some would argue it was the biggest day of the year, if not the last few years. First of all there was the launch of the Nexus 6 and the Nexus 9 along with the new Android TV running Nexus Player. Although these are big releases and typical for this time, this year was different as we also got the official unveiling of Android 5.0 – which was formerly Android L and now officially Android Lollipop. Although this was not the actual ‘final’ release, the system image let loose by Google was as close as we will get before OTA’s start rolling out. Speaking of which since its unveiling the only question on everyone’s minds and lips is “when will I get it”.
Now it’s almost impossible to answer this in a precise answer with all the big companies being rather vague about when and how it will roll out. Generally speaking, the timeframe being touted by almost every OEM is ninety days or three months (depending on semantics). Beyond this OEM’s are being rather tight lipped on which devices will get it and when. HTC was one of the companies who spoke of the ninety day window but now thanks to known HTC tipster LlabTooFeR we can bring you more clarity on the HTC time-frame and more importantly which devices.
According to LlabTooFeR the first devices to receive the Android 5.0 will be the HTC One M8 and HTC One M7 which won’t come as a surprise to many. The expected date for these devices is Late November/Early December which will put them ahead of the ninety day status. In January/February time the update will roll out to the HTC Desire Eye, HTC One M8 (Dual-SIM), HTC One M7 (again Dual-SIM) and the HTC One E8 (both single and dual-SIM). For the HTC Butterfly 2 owners out there, this device is also expected around this time although the vague time-frame is being listed as January-March. Dropping down the Lollipop ranks are the HTC One Mini 2, and HTC Desire 816 which are expected to receive the update sometime in March-April. Even further down the pecking order are the HTC One MAX, HTC One Mini and HTC Butterfly S whose update dates are expected sometime between March and May. For all other HTC devices there is good and bad news. LlabTooFeR does note that this list is not ‘final’ yet and as such the remaining HTC candidates still may make the grade. However, it is also worth noting that LlabTooFeR does also note that these devices are still under “evaluation” and as such may not be eligible for the update OTA at all. Either way, as the details come in we will pass them on to you. Was your device on the list? Happy with the expected time-frame? Let us know your thoughts.
