Last week was a rollercoaster. To put it bluntly. Google announced the Nexus 6, Nexus 9, and Nexus Player on Wednesday. The Nexus 9 and Nexus Player went up for pre-order on Friday. But the Nexus Player was taken down quickly because it hadn’t been approved by the FCC, therefore Google couldn’t sell it. Although a bunch of us were able to get our orders in before that happened. Over the weekend, the Nexus Player hit the FCC and got the stamp of approval, so now it’s back up for your ordering pleasure. The Nexus Player is going to run you about $99, but being on Google Play, that’s not going to be your final price. You also have taxes and shipping to account for here. Ground shipping is $9.99, 2 day shipping is $13.99 and next day shipping is $18.99. And of course, taxes vary by state.
The Gamepad for the Nexus Player isn’t up yet, nor is it included in the Nexus Player. But we should see that come available in the next few weeks. We’ve already ordered a Nexus Player, so we should have one in pretty soon for review and get our first real look at Android TV, even though we did look at it at Google I/O this past summer. The Nexus Player says it’s shipping in 3-4 weeks, which it should be shipping around November 14th. So if you’re not sure whether you want to pick up the Nexus Player, you’ve still got some time to think about it. Basically it’s a Fire TV running Android with Google services. In fact, the remote and gamepad look just like Amazon’s Fire TV, and the Nexus Player itself does as well, except its round instead of a square.
