Top Ten Features of the New Moto X

Motorola have announced a number of new products including the new Moto X, so let me run through the top ten features of the new flagship, starting with the processor. The old Moto X used a customized CPU with dual core application infrastructure, built around a 1.7 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro unit, a cousin of the processor that Google used in the Nexus 4. The new model replaces this with a quad core 2.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 801. This is not quite the very latest processor, that honor goes to the Snapdragon 805, but the 801 is a very capable CPU all the same. It sees service in a number of other 2014 flagship models and provides users with a blend of fast, snappy performance together with low power consumption. This processor is paired up with a 5.2-inch, 1080p HD resolution AMOLED screen with small bezels, the second top feature.

Top features three and four concern calling: I’m pleased to see that Motorola have not ignored one of the core features of a smartphone, that is, talking on it! The number of microphones has been bumped up to four (count ‘em!), the first Android handset with such an advanced noise cancelling function. Furthermore, Motorola have also replaced the Qualcomm antenna with their own external design that includes dynamic tuning. This means that the handset determines where it is being held and adjusts the microphone to suit, which provides better reception. Motorola’s demonstration showed an impressive five-fold improvement in reception, which is good news if you live in an area with indifferent coverage. The new dynamic antenna leads me on to the fifth top feature of the new device, which is the aluminium frame (replacing the old Moto X’s plastic frame). This will give the new Moto a real definite air of class and of course allows the external antenna to work its magic.

Writing of the design, the sixth new feature is the dual front mounted speakers. My first experience of dual front mounted speakers came with the original HTC One (M7) and it’s a feature that I’ve found incredibly useful in day to day life, either as a speaker ‘phone or when using Google Navigation in the car. Feature seven is the improved camera; now the Moto X ships with a 13 MP rear mounted Sony Exmor RS camera with a ring-flash module and the ability to capture video at 4K resolution. My eighth new feature is the enhancements to Moto Maker, where Motorola have added more authentic wood options plus genuine leather. We’ve already seen other manufacturers replicate the wooden backed handset over the last twelve months and I’m pleased to see that Moto have pushed this forwards.

Feature nine is the enhancements to Motorola’s voice command functionality with the inclusion of Moto Voice, which brings the ability to control major third party applications including Facebook, YouTube and WhatsApp. You’ll also be able to set up a custom greeting to wake up your device. Motorola gave a few examples of “wake up, buddy!” and “you there, Moto X?” but I’m sure readers can come up with much more creative options! Feature ten is the inclusion of a nano water resistant coating. Motorola haven’t followed Sony or Samsung’s water proofing of devices but instead have given the device a special coating that will help it survive an occasional spill or use in rain. However, I need to be absolutely clear to my readers: if you liquid-damage your new Moto X after reading this article, we cannot be responsible for this!
