We continue to makes the rounds at IFA, getting all the best video coverage possible. Now we’ve had a little time with the new Ascend Mate 7, a 6-inch flagship from Huawei that offers pretty solid specs including their in-house Kirin octa-core processor.
Design wise, the phone has an attractive and sleek metal construction with lines that give it a nice profile. The phone is very thin at 7.9mm and it really feels great in the hands and is still pretty easy to grip despite the phone’s overall size — though obviously one-handed use my be a little difficult as you’d expect. There’s also a fingerprint scanner onboard with up to support for 5 fingerprint profiles, which is one of the marque features for the device.
The display on the Mate 7 is very big at 6-inches, though the resolution is a relatively standard 1080p, which provides a pixel density of 368ppi. While that’s not exactly going to blow anyone away like a QHD resolution might on such a large screen, it’s still more than enough to create a respectable viewing experience.
Under the hood you’ll find the previously mentioned Kirin 925 which is an octa-core configuration with 4 low and 4 high-power processors. Some of the other specs include 2GB of RAM, 16GB storage with microSD, a 13MP rear cam with a Sony EXMOR RS sensor, a 5MP front cam and — most impressively — a gigantic 4100 mAh battery. Despite the phone’s size, the battery here is big enough that should be able to get all day battery life or even as much as two days of moderate use.
Turning to the software, we find the Emotion UI running on top of Android KitKat, which comes with its own modified quick settings, a custom theme selector and more. While certainly not stock Android, we have to admit that the interface here looks pretty attractive and seems very fast and fluid. We spent a little time playing with the camera software, and found that the simplistic look is nice and easy to use with a few special settings like HDR mode, Panorama, beauty mode and more.
