For the first time ever, Japanese Wireless operator Softbank will offer a Sony smartphone. The news comes from Reuters and their many sources that have confirmed that Softbank will be carrying Sony products. It is expected that the soon to be unveiled Xperia Z3 will be one of the first to be carried by Softbank. This new deal that has been made by Softbank and Sony could potentially help out Sony’s mobile division. Sony’s mobile division hasn’t seen many sunny days this past year with zero profit expectancies back in March. Sony also lowered their sales forecast for the 2014/2015 financial year by 14%. Sony even went ahead and warned everyone that their mobile unit could post impairment loss.
The reason for Sony’s lack of force in the mobile world is due to Chinese competitors creating low-cost devices. Not to mention the tons of knock offs that China is known for making. Another reason for Sony’s mobile division falling behind is because of their lack of presence in the United States. T-Mobile is the only carrier in the U.S. that carries any Sony products. This is why selling Sony handsets through Softbank will give Sony that little push they need to achieve the success they are looking for.
Out of the three major businesses that Sony runs, video gaming and imaging are their most successful with their Mobile division being the riskiest. According to Reuters, four of their sources indicated that the Xperia Z3 will be available in Japan by their winter holiday shopping season. Word on when the Xperia Z3 will come to the United States has yet to be known. Also, the source did not have an available price so that is unknown as well. When asked by Reuters, Sony and Softbank declined to comment, so we are strongly holding on to what sources have informed us. As we all know, Sony plans to unveil the Sony Xperia Z3 at IFA in Berlin which just so happens to be next week. So the time is almost here to see if Sony has what it takes to revive its Mobile division and knock out all of those Chinese companies making low-cost phone.
