Google expands the universe of email addresses it will recognize in Gmail

Google announced today what they think is a significant step forward in enabling communication via email around the globe. Google’s Gmail application, and soon Calendar, will now recognize accented Latin characters or non-Latin characters used in an email address. Google points out that less than half of the world’s population uses a mother tongue based solely on the Latin alphabet. By accepting additional characters as part of an email address, the possibilities for people to get email addresses that make more sense to them is broadened.

The move to expand the universe of acceptable characters in an email address came from a new standard created in 2012 by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). In order to make the IETF’s new standard a reality though, every email provider has to adopt the standard. Google decide they would take one of the first steps to help bring about the change the IETF is looking for.

Google’s action is somewhat limited though. For the present, Gmail users can only send and receive emails to other users who may be using non-Latin or accented Latin characters in their email addresses. Google will not yet let users create their own Gmail accounts using anything other than Latin characters. They promise that change is coming though.

Google continues to expand the reach of their products to people who may not use the Latin alphabet. Just last month they added support for 13 new languages in Gmail. That addition brought the platform up to covering 94% of the world’s population.
