The Electronics Giant Samsung has by far the widest range of smart watches available on the market. Practically being a pioneer in the smartwatch realm, Samsung has seen competition arise since Google released Android Wear at their I/O this year. The LG G Watch and the Moto 360 are just two of the three Android Wear devices unveiled this year — the third being their very own Gear Live. As any company would be, when new opponents step up to the plate, you got to make the right strategic moves to either knock them out or at least be up there with them. The moves Samsung plans to make is by making their smartwatch category a little bit longer.
Recently discovered by Mobile Geeks were three new smartwatch patents by Samsung. The patents were found on the USPTO database. The first noticeable changes with these patents are the rounded displays. As you already know, the Moto 360 is the first smartwatch ever to have a rounded display. Many other smartwatches that have surfaced have always head a square screen. With the rounded display shown in the patents, it shows that Samsung has been taking some cues from their competitor.
Taking a closer look at the smartwatch patents, you can see what looks like a charging port on the bracelet. The port is located at the end of the strap where you would secure the smartwatch into place. Just like the other Galaxy Gear watches, the patent designs include cameras. One slight change made with these designs are sensors for gesture recognition. According to Patent No: US D709,873 S, the gestures are used for controlling your TV.
As of right now, there is no word on whether the Samsung Smartwatch patents will run on Android Wear or their own home brewed Tizen. There is also no official word from Samsung about these devices, as they were found floating around in the USPTO database. The patent designs are quite intriguing and give us an idea of what Samsung may have in the works. You can view images of the patents in the gallery below.
