Nokia Isn’t Done with Android, Releases a Predictive Launcher Called ‘Z Launcher’

Nokia sold their hardware division to Microsoft, and then released an Android handset. As an Android enthusiast and a Nokia fan, I’ve been pining for a high-end Android phone with Nokia hardware for a long time. That’s probably not ever going to happen, but Nokia isn’t done with Android yet. Today they released a predictive launcher called Z Launcher. It looks pretty slick.

Z Launcher predicts which apps you’re going to want based on what you’ve recently used. It learns as you go, offering up the apps you want, when you want them. It has a minimal, stock launcher design, but it’s supposed to be smarter than your average launcher. There are gesture controls built-in too. These allow you to search your apps alphabetically, minimizing or even eliminating the need to open your app drawer and scroll through apps. Nokia wants to make your life easier. Check out the intro video that they released:

App prediction isn’t new. EverythingMe Launcher and Aviate are some of the more recent launchers that have tried to get this right. Aviate is my personal favorite. I could never get EverythingMe to work the way I wanted it to. Nokia is hoping their offering performs better. It’s only available for a few phones at the moment. If you have a Galaxy S5, S4, or even and S3, a Moto X, a Sony Xperia Z1, an HTC One, or a Nexus 5, you can sign up at ZLauncher.com . The app is in a limited beta for now, so you’ll just have to sign up and wait your turn. We’re hearing that Z Launcher works with the LG G3, too, which means it may also work with the G2. Those devices aren’t officially supported, but you’re welcome to give it a shot anyways.

Do you like predictive app launchers? Are you a stock launcher type of person?
