This morning’s Android Auto announcement cleared the rumors and took us into the next era of automotive entertainment systems… Google’s era. We knew Audi would be among the first cars to partner with Google, but it seems they may be taking a little longer to bring Android Auto to market.
A new press release states the luxury car manufacturer will be bringing Android Auto-enabled cars to market starting in 2015. New vehicles with Audi MMI infotainment systems will come with Android Auto.
Why is Audi taking so long? We do know 25 manufacturers plan to release Android Auto devices by the end of 2014. The list would include Acura, Alfa Romeo, Audi, Bentley, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, Fiat, Ford, Honda, Mazda, Subaru, Volkswagen, Renault, Maserati, Infiniti and Jeep.
Audi is known for being quite adventurous with new technologies, sometimes taking huge risks, but we must remember these are luxury cars we speak about. They don’t follow the same stadards as other car manufacturers. Compared to other luxury car makers, Audi is taking a big leap of faith with Google.
Features
- Android Auto will provide a seamless link for Android mobile car apps to function through the Audi MMI® infotainment system.
- Motorists will be able to project apps and services optimized for voice commands and the driving environment.
As we previously learnt, Android Auto will not offer a complex entertainment system. Instead it is light and very dependent on your smartphone; we may even dare to say it’s a bit limited. This is the purpose of Android Auto, though. It is meant to be safe and convenient, revolving around navigation, music and communications.
You can ask Google Now for information on places, request a navigation route, play certain songs and even listen to (and send) text messages – all via voice controls! It’s really outstanding, so be sure to keep an eye out if you are thinking of buying an Audi next year.
