Google’s new wireless plan might only be compatible with the Nexus 6

Well here’s a Debbie Downer for today. Google’s new wireless MVNO plan could be announced in a few weeks, but according to the Wall Street Journal, only the Nexus 6 will be able to use it.

This does seem crazy at first, but if you think about it, it doesn’t seem all that surprising when you consider how Google’s new service will work. It’s rumored to work with both Sprint and T-Mobile as in automatically switching to the best available network along with Wi-Fi. It appears that Google and Motorola were planning on this when building the phone. Motorola already has similar experience with Republic Wireless’ feature of auto-switching between Wi-Fi and Sprint’s network when Wi-Fi isn’t available.

Google is also notorious for launching products and services on a very small scale, so this wouldn’t be a shocker to me.

WSJ did say the service is supposed to get announced in a few weeks, but it could get delayed. Reading between the lines means that we should see an announcement at Google I/O. And if this rumor of it only being available on the Nexus 6 is true, you can expect Google I/O attendees to receive a Nexus 6 as one of their gifts.
