One of the big questions surrounding Android Auto and also Apple’s CarPlay, is if it’s safe. That’s the biggest reason that Android Auto isn’t yet available in cars. It’s been shown off at various trade shows and Auto shows, but you can’t go to a dealership and pick out a car that supports Android Auto right now. So today, we’re going to explore whether it’s safe or not, to drive with Android Auto for navigation, music, and even calls.
Now, I have to say that I have not had the chance to use Android Auto while driving a car. But it’s much more safe than picking up your phone and looking at it for directions or changing music. For one, you have a larger screen, that’s built into the dashboard, so your eyes can still be on the road. Another is the fact that the UI is so easy to use that people can use it without looking at it. Thus keeping their eyes on the road. Most cars, that we’ve seen demos of, that have Android Auto built in, also have buttons on the steering wheel for changing songs, changing the volume and even making calls. Which again keeps drivers eyes on the road.
So is Android Auto safe? It’s kind of tough to say. While it’s definitely safer than holding onto your phone all the time for navigation and such, is it perfectly safe? Probably not. But then again, what navigation or infotainment system is perfectly safe. Where Google is taking their time with Android Auto, it looks like Google is really working to make sure that Android Auto is safe, which is always a good thing. Hopefully we’ll see Android Auto out on the roads very soon, as I’m definitely excited to really test it out and see how well it does for safety.
