Motorola India have announced via Twitter that both the first and second generation Motorola Moto G devices can now receive the update to Android 5.0.2 Lollipop. This news follows a number of soak tests conducted over the last week or so and brings the very latest version of Lollipop, 5.0.2, to the device, skipping version 5.0, which was troublesome for some users on some devices, most notably the 2012 Google Nexus 7 tablet. Motorola have also announced that they are releasing the new software version in a phased manner, which means that if your device doesn’t have the update immediately, there’s no point in repeatedly checking; instead wait twenty four hours and try again. Users can manually check for updates by going into Settings, then About Phone and from here, into Software Update – although the Moto G will automatically check for you and let you know if something has arrived.
Compared with Android 4.4 KitKat, Android 5.0 Lollipop includes the material design interface, which encompasses improved notification handling, the lock screen and the multitasking screen. There are new functions built into the operating system including the ability to automatically keep your device unlocked when in a trusted area or in range of a trusted Bluetooth device. Under the skin, Google have improved device performance thanks to a new RunTime engine (this is the part of the operating system that handles and launches applications, it’s been significantly improved for Lollipop). There are also battery life improvements, too; Android Lollipop includes a network activity scheduler, which works with cooperative applications to reduce unnecessary network activity and therefore keep the device asleep for longer.
Motorola India have already released the update to Android 5.0 for the second generation Moto X but customers are still waiting for the updates for the first generation Moto X and Moto E devices. These are expected in the coming weeks but we don’t have an exact timescale yet. As soon as we hear anything, we’ll let you know. Meanwhile, if you are using a Moto G in India and you’ve received the update to Android Lollipop, please let us know in the comments below how you get on with the update.
