The biggest question we hear about Android Auto is why isn’t it available yet? Well when I talked with Hyundai at the North American International Auto show this past week, he told me that they are actually waiting on Google. So it looks like Google hasn’t finished developing it just yet. Which shouldn’t be a surprise. Hyundai did say we could see it as soon as next week, or as late as next year. We’ve already seen a few car makers implement it into their newer cars, so it can’t be too far off, right?
So what about those third party Android Auto head units we saw at CES from Kenwood, Pioneer and others? Those should be available pretty soon as well. However, Android Auto is the type of product from Google that you don’t want them to rush. Say they rush it, and release it with some bugs. That could really cause some accidents. And we definitely don’t want that.
Android Auto is a great infotainment system, from the little time I got to use it at the NAIAS earlier this week. Hyundai, Ford, Chevy, and Audi all have it integrated into their 2016 models, and Hyundai specifically said that any of their cars with the bigger screens will get upgraded to Android Auto and Carplay integration. Which I think is key to the success of Android Auto. As not everyone is going to buy a car in the next couple of years. Cars are different from smartphones. Smartphones you’ll buy every year, but a car is closer to every 5 years or more.
So Android Auto is still waiting on Google. Which is unfortunate, but I think we’ll see it very, very soon. And I definitely can’t wait to see it out on the road. How many of you are excited for Android Auto? Let us know in the comments below.
