A few weeks ago, Verizon let us in on their plans for Advanced calling, which the beginning of that is rolling out today to just two phones right now. According to Verizon’s site, it’s only compatible with the LG G2 and the Samsung Galaxy S5. What do we get with Advanced Calling 1.0? Well we get VoLTE and Video calls through the phone app. So instead of using something like Hangouts, or Skype, or even Facetime for you Apple users out there, you can use the phone app on your phone and it should work cross platform. Although we can’t test that as the only compatible devices run Android right now.
In addition we get VoLTE. Which Google kinda beat all the carriers too last week with it’s Hangouts update. With VoLTE, you can finally get rid of that 3G network that Verizon hasn’t done any work on in years, and use 4G LTE to place your calls. This also means it’s going to use more data. However, we’ve been using VoLTE through Hangouts for the past few days and so far it hasn’t used a ton of data. About 612KB for a one-minute call. Which isn’t bad at all. But just be mindful of that.
What’s interesting though, is the webpage that Verizon has up shows the LG G3 and Galaxy S5, however if you click on compatible devices it’ll only give you the Samsung Galaxy S5 and the LG G2. So unless someone made a mistake over at Verizon, it looks like there might be a LG G3 OTA in the works pretty soon to bring Advanced Calling 1.0 to that device. We’ll be sure to keep our eyes out for that one.
