We wrote recently about Google’s Android One event taking place in India today and the three smartphone brands which will showcase their Android One offerings there. Karbonn, Spice and Micromax are the companies in questions and we’ll talk about Karbonn in this post. Karbonn has launched its first Android One smartphone at said event and it is called Karbonn Sparkle V. Though I’m not a big fan of the name, the device might be compelling to some people. Let’s see what’s it all about.
The device sports a 4.5-inch FWVGA (854 x 480) IPS display along with 1GB of RAM and 4GB of internal storage (expandable via MicroSD card). 1.3GHz quad-core processor (wasn’t mentioned, but it’s a MediaTek’s chip judging by the GPU) with Mali-400 GPU on board as well. 5-megapixel camera is located at the back of the device and flanked by a LED flash while there’s a 2-megapixel shooter on the front of the device. 1,700mAh battery is here to take care of juicing up the device with Android 4.4 KitKat operating system powering the device on the software side. This is a dual SIM device and it is 10.4mm thick. It comes with 3G HSPA+, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity options with GPS being on board as well, of course. FM radio is a part of the package as well and the device comes in red color while it is priced at Rs 6,399 (approximately $105). Karbonn Sparkle V will be available exclusively on Snapdeal at 3:30PM (India time).
As a reminder, this device is part of Google’s Android One project in which the company partners with manufacturers in order to deliver low cost devices with Google’s software inside. This means the devices will receive timely updates while manufacturers are allowed to add their apps inside as long as they don’t mess with anything else as far as software goes. Think of it as vanilla Android with additional apps on the side if manufacturers choose to include them, no TouchWiz-like skins or anything of the sort.
