Verizon Looking to Take on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store with their Own

A new report coming out today from the Information, shows that Verizon is trying it’s hand at an app store once again. Now Verizon had their own app store for a few years, and just recently closed it down because, well no one was using it. Reportedly, Verizon is looking to go beyond just downloading apps and looking to create an all new experience.

“Verizon also wants to go beyond simply offering apps for download; it aspires to create a service that proactively recommends apps to people based on data like their location, the time of day and what their friends are doing on their phones. That would give the store some of the characteristics of so-called “launcher” or “lockscreen” apps for Android phones that try to anticipate the apps a person might need.”

Why would Verizon want to do this? I mean it failed for them once already. Well word is they want to offer discounted data for the apps downloaded through their store. Which sounds like a big red flag for net neutrality to me. But as far as benefits for customers like you and me, well there really isn’t any that we can find just yet. It would be easier carrier billing, but I’m not sure how much easier Verizon can make it since Google Play Carrier Billing is already pretty darn easy to do.

I’m not totally sure that this is a good idea for Verizon here. Google Play already has a ton of apps, and so do Amazon’s App Store. Which both are already preloaded on every Verizon Android device out there. Hopefully we find out more info on this very soon, but it just doesn’t sound like a good idea at all. And with the FCC already breathing down Verizon’s neck about their throttling, you’d think they’d stay away from Net Neutrality stuff for a while.
