The Sony Xperia Z2a Gets Launch Treatment In The Taiwanese Market

Xperia Z2a

While some of us are waiting for Sony to launch the Xperia Z2 on any U.S. carrier at all, they have just launched a variant of the device for the Taiwanese market today called the Xperia Z2a. For the most part the Xperia Z2 and the Xperia Z2a are the same device, save for a few key details or pieces of hardware. The first thing that’s noticeable is the body of the device, mainly the glass back and the metal band that surrounds the edge of the phone on the Xperia Z2. Those two things are absent on the Xperia Z2a and instead of have been replaced with a soft touch plastic design. The screen is also slightly smaller it seems as it weighs in at 5-inches instead of the 5.2-inches seen on the Xperia Z2.

There are a few more differences between both phones but just about everything else is the same. Both the Xperia Z2 and the Xperia Z2a carry the same 20.7MP Exmor RS camera sensor on the back with LED flash, although the placement of the rear camera on the Xperia Z2a is directly in the middle as opposed to being in the left corner like on the Xperia Z2. Both devices have 3GB of RAM and offer 16GB of internal storage space, and both are certified with an IP58 rating for dust and water resistance of up to 1 meter for up to a 30 minute time period. The Snapdragon 801 with Areno 330 GPU can slo be seen in both devices.

Oddly enough, Sony chose to give the Xperia Z2a a smaller battery although not by much. It comes with a 3,000mAh battery instead of the 3,200mAh seen in the Z2, and the front facing camera is also different sitting at VGA(0.3MP) instead of 2.2 like we would have expected. When it comes to network support the Xperia Z2a will work on LTE, and you’ll also find support for Bluetooth 4.0 LE as well as WiFi 802.11a/b/g/n/ac. When it comes down to it the Xperia Z2a even with the slightly smaller battery and less capable front facing camera, still sounds like a pretty decent phone. It even comes in at a lower price than the Z2 for an equivalent of about $632 and comes in three colors with Black, White, and Turquoise. Sadly, that lower price won’t matter to U.S. consumers as this device is likely a Taiwan launch only.
