As part of Update Wednesday, Google has also updated Gmail. Which is now on version 4.9. This update brings the ability to add Google Drive Files as attachments in emails. It doesn’t sound like a huge deal but being able to add Google Drive docs from your phone to your Gmail is really easy and convenient. Outside of being able to add Google Drive files, that’s about all we’ve found new in this update to Gmail. No material design updates for the app just yet, even though we’ve a few leaks with the new design. So we’ll probably see that update closer to the fall when Android L is available for the masses. As the Gmail app really needs a design overhaul, it hasn’t had a really new design since Ice Cream Sandwich in 2011.
It’s great to see Gmail and Google Drive getting even more integrated with each other. Which is great, especially for people like me that use Google Drive for all their documents and stuff. It’s nice to be able to quickly attach a document to an email without running to my laptop, or going into the Google Drive app and copying the URL for the said document then adding it to the email. This makes it a lot easier and seamless.
The update is rolling out right now as a staged rollout. But never fear, we have an APK ready for you to download and get the update on your device right now. For those interested in version 4.9, you can get the APK from the link down below. The update is for Android 4.0 and above and weighs in at about 5.7MB. So it’s not a huge app, but not tiny either. It’s smaller than the Google Camera app that was updated earlier today.
