As Google I/O prepares to get underway later this week, companies are poised to share their stories and successes not only for the media covering the event, but with the developers as well as they hope to entice them to use their wares in their own solutions. One company that is on-hand is Qualcomm which produces chips used in many Android-based devices. Their latest graphics processor, the Adreno 420, just happens to be making its public debut in the market with the launch of the new Samsung Galaxy S5 Broadband LTE-A device. Part of Qualcomm’s new Adreno 400 family of SoC GPUs, the chip will help raise the bar for mobile-gaming experiences and should bring mobile devices on par with desktop systems.

The Adreno 420 comes with both OpenGL ES 3.1 and Direct3D 11 functionality. This is mated with improved power consumption. The new upgraded architectures available for developers means they can access features like tesselation, compute shaders, support for adaptive scalable texture compression. Many of the new features were previously available only on desktop units, so game developers will have a lot of new room to explore with their game development.
