Sprint also has an announcement today that’s not just about the Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge or the HTC One M9. It’s about international travel. They are announcing a new add-on today for those that travel a lot. The International Value add-on gives you free data and texting overseas. According to Sprint’s press release, “travel to major areas in Latin America, Europe and Japan and roam with up to 2G speeds to read emails and surf the web at no additional charge.” So it appears that they are doing the same thing T-Mobile has been doing for a few months now. While Sprint calls it an “add-on”, we aren’t able to find a price for it just yet. So it looks like it’s free.
If 2G speeds aren’t fast enough. Sprint does offer data passes. You can get 100MB of high-speed data for $15. 200MB for $25, and 500MB for $50. The 100MB pass is a one-day pass, the 200MB pass is good for seven days and the 500MB pass is good for 14 days. While they say it’s high-speed, they also tout that it’s only up to 3G speeds. Which in a lot of countries that’s all you’ll get anyways. It’s also worth noting that in other countries HSPA+ is actually 3G, while in the US we consider it 4G. Still, that’s faster than 2G or EDGE speeds. By far.
Sprint’s CEO, Marcelo Claure announced today that while it’s only for major areas in Latin America, Europe, and Japan, they will be adding more countries in the near future. Claure wants to be sure that his customers can use their device where ever they travel. Without needing to worry about international roaming fees. As someone who’s traveling quite a bit internationally lately, I can tell you those international data fees are not fun.
Sprint’s international roaming pretty much mirrors what T-Mobile offers. The International Value add on is part of the Unlimited Plus plan which is available exclusively for the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge which launched today. It’s a great plan for those that travel outside of the US frequently.
