Upleaks has Tweeted that the next generation HTC Butterfly model, the Butterfly 3, set to be released in three colors for the Japanese market, these being red, white and blue. This mirrors the HTC Butterfly 2, which was announced last August and came in similar red, white and blue colors. We’re expecting the Butterfly 3 to initially be sold by the Japanese KDDI carrier before being sold around the Asia region.
At this juncture, we don’t know any detail of the third generation HTC Butterfly, but based on the differences between the HTC One M8 and the HTC Butterfly 2, it seems reasonable to expect that the HTC Butterfly 3 will be similar to the HTC One M9 but slightly improved across the board. One difference is that the One M8 is built from metal whereas the Butterfly 2 is polycarbonate, plus the Butterfly 2 has water and dust protection. Under the bodywork, however, we may expect the Butterfly 3 to be based around the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor, clocked at 2.0 GHz. The Butterfly 2 used a slightly higher performance version of the Snapdragon 801 compared with the One M8, at 2.5 GHz compared with 2.3 GHz (for most regions) and so it’s possible that the Butterfly 3 will use a slightly higher performance version of the Snapdragon 810 compared with the HTC One M9 or perhaps even a newer generation processor. We’d expect both devices to come with 3 GB of memory, likely 32 GB of internal storage plus a MicroSD card slot for additional expansion. Assuming that the Butterfly 3 has a similar screen to the One M9, we’d be looking at a 5.0-inch, 1080p display. Finally, we’ve seen a small difference in battery capacity between the One M8 and the Butterfly 2, with 2,600 mAh and 2,700 mAh respectively – we may also see a small increase in battery capacity for the Butterfly 3 model.
One difference between the One and Butterfly models is the camera. The 2014 HTC One M8 had a 4MP Ultrapixel rear camera with a duo depth perception sensor. The 2014 Butterfly 2 came with dual 13MP cameras. For 2015, the HTC One M9 comes with a single 21MP rear camera… we will have to wait and see what the Butterfly 3 comes with. And that likely means waiting until August.
