Samsung was the world’s number one smartphone manufacturer for a long time. The company did experience some issues in 2014, which resulted in them losing the number one spot to Apple quite recently. As you all know, Samsung has announced the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge devices earlier this month, and is hoping those two smartphones will bring them to the right path. Analysts actually agree with that assumption, and this Korean tech giant reportedly even had to increase production when it comes to their Galaxy S6 Edge handset because of the demand.
That being said, Samsung has suffered their first annual profit decline in three years in 2014. Samsung Mobile’s operating income fell 42%, which is a serious hit for this Korean giant. The realized that they have to change something, and have first started incorporating metal along with plastic when building their devices, and ultimately released a metal unibody Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge devices. The company also cleaned up their TouchWiz UI to some extent, because many people considered it to be too bloated and laggy.
Despite the profit dip, the chief of Samsung Mobile managed to double its income in 2014 compared to a year before, mainly due to the company’s record profits in 2013. Anyhow, J.K.Shin received 14.57 billion won ($13 million) in 2014, which included a base salary of 1.73 billion won and 3.73 billion won in all sorts of incentives. The Head of Samsung Mobile received 9.11 billion won in other payments for the company’s success in 2013.
Samsung’s Chief Executive Kwon Oh-hyun, on the other hand, received 9.39 billion won, which is significantly more to what he received a year before (6.77 billion). The company didn’t release information for other executives of the company, like Jay Y. Lee, Samsung’s vice-chairman and son of the company’s chairman. This will certainly be an exciting year for Samsung, but judging by the reactions to the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge, Samsung might be able to get back on the right path and win over some of the marketshare they lost last year. It remains to be seen what happens, but this will be an exciting year for Android, that’s for sure.
