Android Epic App Battle: News Republic V.S. Yahoo New Digest

AH Epic App Battles 1.0

There are many ways to get your news these days, whether that’s traditionally from the printed medium or from online via your computer or smartphone. You can even grab all of the news you need from apps. The questions is, which apps are the best news apps out there? We’re going to attempt to find out in this week’s app battle as were pitting two popular news apps against each other, News Republic, and Yahoo News Digest. The great thing about both of these is that they each gather a collective set of news sources and stories and feed them to you all in one app so you aren’t having to download and install multiple apps to stay up to date on the latest headlines. Which app deserves to be the champion though? We’ll go over a few features of each app here, and then let you all vote in the G+ poll on which one deserves the crown.

News RepublicNews Republic

News Republic‘s main goal is to feed you the latest breaking news so you’re never missing out on what’s important and what’s happening in the now. It filters in breaking news coverage from over 1,000 licensed and trusted news feeds from around the globe so it isn’t just localized or grabbing news from a few specific topics. You get news from everywhere. The format is praised and touted as highly visual, so if you really like to see what’s going on and ingest your news with as much visual appeal as possible with bog, bold images, News Republic is trying to give you that experience. The app also gives complete articles that contain full text so you aren’t getting snippets of articles, they also contain any photos and videos from the original article sources so you get the news as it was intended from the source.

The My News digest feature is a daily news briefing that centers around you so you get exactly what you want, and you can even customize your app homescreen experience with choosing from over 1 million topics. The app gives you a little bit more customization too by letting you add custom headlines for your favorite RSS feeds, and the TagNav feature will let you explore related topics to anything you’re currently reading.

Yahoo News DigestYahoo News Digest

Yahoo News Digest does things a little bit differently when it comes to feeding you your news. While it can be nice to have a news app dedicated to every source, and it can also be nice to have a one stop shop app that can feed you all your news from all the sources you follow while also giving you the compete article with full text(like News Republic)sometimes you don’t need every single detail and you just want to get the main context so you know what’s happening. That’s what Yahoo News Digest provides for the user.

It gives a definitive summary of all the news that one could consider important or “need-to-know” so you don’t miss out on the things that are happening around you, but you also get summary, focused details and not the entire block of content from beginning to end. Yahoo News Digests also delivers your news to you in daily digests(the name makes sense right?)but only twice a day. Once in the morning, and once at night. During these times of delivering news the app takes all the top stories of the morning and evening and presents in an easy-to-read summarized format with the key details and information. To make sure that you don’t miss any of the important details,(called ‘Atoms’)Yahoo News Digest pulls the information from multiple sources so it can compile the summarized story for you. Atoms include key quotes, videos and photos, maps, infographs, wikipedia excerpts, and more, so you can be sure that what you’re getting isn’t just key bits of text only. Yahoo News Digest also curates their news summary stories for you both by hand by a team dedicated specialists, and by a unique algorithm they created.

So, which news app is more deserving of the crown? The app that gives you the summary of all the key details? Or the app that gives you the complete, full article with full text, photos, and videos? Both apps are good in their own right and have something to offer specific people. Which one do you find the most useful though? Which one do you enjoy more? Don’t forget to vote in the G+ poll.
