Samsung announced the Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge a couple of weeks ago at Berlin at the IFA show. At the time, Samsung didn’t disclose the release dates or pricing for these devices. Since then, we’ve seen various networks announce the availability of these two high end handsets. Now, the Note Edge has popped up at the FCC being certified for the Japanese market. There are two models here, the SCL24 (for network operator KDDI) and SC-01G (for NTT Docomo). The Japanese mobile market is different to many others across the world in that there is no 2G network support. Indeed, there hasn’t been a 2G-only mobile ‘phone sold in Japan for over seven years. Seven years! Japan’s 3G networks are supported by LTE and the Note 4 and Note Edge will fit right in, so let’s refresh ourselves on these two devices.
The Note 4 and Note Edge have similar specifications but both are absolutely at the top end. Each device is powered by a quad core 2.7 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor equipped with 3 GB of RAM. It has 16 GB or 32 GB of internal storage plus a MicroSD card, a 16 MP opticially stabilised read camera, high speed networking via Cat 6 LTE, 802.11ac WiFi and Bluetooth 4.1. There’s also Samsung’s heart rate sensor and of course the S-Pen. Each has a very high resolution screen, but here’s where the two devices differ. The Note 4 has a conventional, if insanely sharp 1,440 by 2,560 pixel 5.7-inch AMOLED display. The Edge has a slightly smaller 5.6-inch screen with even more pixels, at 1,600 by 2,560, but as you look at the front of the device, the screen curves around the edge. This space may be used for notifications, control buttons and similar as well as part of the ordinary full screen. If Samsung’s software uses some clever trickery, and here I’m thinking along the lines of the Moto Display, this could make the Note Edge’s innovation truly exceptional. We’ll have to wait and see how the Edge’s software hangs together in day to day use.
We’ve no word on when the Galaxy Note Edge will be launched with either KDDI or NTT Docomo, but we know it’s coming in early October to other markets so we reckon some time in the next three weeks.
