Platform games are among the longest running genres in all of video games. They’ve been around since they invented graphics and they’re still among the most popular and fun games available today. This also holds true on Android and we believe it’s because touch screen controls translate very well in this genre. Let’s take a look at the best Android platform games.

First up is BADLAND which gained popularity for being well designed and fun to play. It’s a 2D side-scrolling platform game where you must navigate obstacles and complete levels. The game is free to try but eventually you have to play for the later levels. It’ll probably win some awards this year for its great design and colorful graphics along with its fluid game play. It’s worth a download to try out!

Cordy 2 is a more traditional 2D platformer where you control a robot as you navigate levels, platforms, puzzles, and obstacles. You can also get powers to help you along the way and there are the usual spread of bad guys and boss fights. There are 53 total levels which is a good length for a platformer and you can play the first six levels for free to see if you like it. EDGE Extended is a different kind of platform game. Instead of controlling a character and jumping around to avoid bad guys, you instead play as a block and you kind of block around and do block things. It’s more fun than it sounds as you have to navigate obstacles and solve puzzles to get from level to level. It’s $2.99 and rocks an incredible 4.8 rating in the Google Play Store. People love this game because it’s a really good game and it is a little something different in the platformer genre.

Granny Smith is a unique platformer. You must play as Granny Smith on her roller skates as you chase down the apple thief. The game play is fairly entertaining especially when you watch the old lady crash through windows, roofs, and various other obstacles like she’s Juggernaut. It’s a lot of fun, it’s ridiculous, and it’s highly rated. That means it’s worth a look!

Leo’s Fortune gained popularity after it was demoed at Google I/O 2014 on the Android TV. It’s a highly rated adventure platform game where you play as Leo who has had his fortune stolen. It features colorful, sharp graphics with a pseudo steampunk theme. The game play is fluid, fun, and there are some unique obstacles to keep you guessing. Each level has three stars so you’ll likely have to play a number of them again. A lot of people love this game and chances are that you will too.

MEGATROID is a mix between Megaman and Metroid. They changed just enough (or have flown under the radar enough) to not warrant any lawsuits yet and the game is pretty fun. You play as a robot (presumably) and you run, wall jump, and shoot bad guys. As you play you can get all sorts of power ups and weapons and you can buy some if you so choose using in app currency. If you’re a fan of Megaman and Metroid style games then you’ll probably enjoy this one.

Mikey Shorts is a free platformer that isn’t all that difficult but it can still be fun. The controls are easy to learn and are customizable and you’ll have to jump, run, and slide to avoid walls and obstacles. It has received flack for being a little too easy but that’s very subjective. This is a great game for younger audiences and it is totally free.

Prince of Persia games are one of the highest rated platform empires on consoles and it appears as though developers are going to try it on mobile as well. Shadow & Flame is $2.99 with in app purchases which may scare off some people but the game is still pretty fun. You’ll be solving puzzles, sword fighting, and jumping around to complete levels. It’s been adapted for touchscreen game play but they haven’t done as well with third party controller support. Thus, if you use something like Moga, you may get not enjoy this one so much.

Rayman was a popular title back during the PlayStation days and it’s now back on Android. It’s a more classic 2D platformer where you must jump around, kill bad guys, collect things, and complete levels. This is a great title for the nostalgia crowd and it gets pretty difficult as you progress. Each game also packs a ton of levels which will keep you busy for a while. If you’re a fan of the old Rayman series then try these out!

Sega has done a great job bringing Sonic to Android and in terms of platform games, it’s one of the best of all time. Everyone knows who Sonic is and literally everyone who owned a Sega Genesis played this game. They’re $2.99 each and you already know what you’re in for if you pick them up. The controls have translated well to touchscreen and after a couple of minutes you’ll be running and spinning around like you used to.

The Cave is an eccentric platform game out of Double Fine Productions which are known for their awesome PC games. In The Cave you play as a number of characters (all with their own stories) as you move around and play inside of, you guessed it, a cave. The fun part is that you must play with several characters and switch between them to solve puzzles. It also has decent graphics. It’s $4.99 but there are no in app purchases.

Wind-up Knight 1 and 2 are 3D platformers that have earned praise for their good graphics and solid game play. You run around as a wind-up knight that slashes down bad guys and moves around obstacles. Some people prefer the first one over the second one so we recommended them both. They’re both free with in app purchases so it won’t cast you anything to check them out to see if you like them.
