During Samsung’s Unpacked event in Berlin during IFA 2014, Samsung had a little surprise for us all with the introduction of a Galaxy Note smartphone with a curved display to it. We’ve been hearing about a Galaxy Note with a curved display since before the Galaxy Note 3 was announced last year, but this year Samsung has announced the Galaxy Note Edge with a curved display, around well, the edge of the smartphone. It’s a 5.6-inch device, coming in a little smaller than the Galaxy Note 4′s display, but it has some interesting tricks up its sleeve.
The Galaxy Note Edge is actually a little shorter than the Note 4, but it is a little wider, accommodating that curved edge coming in at 3.8mm wider and 2.2mm shorter than the Note 4. The 5.6-inch Super AMOLED display is dubbed as “Quad HD+”, which gives it a resolution of 2560 x 1440, with an extra row of 160 pixels in that curved right-hand edge. Samsung is using this curved bar to hide UI elements like play and pause when watching something, or extra functions of the Note software, which is a nice touch. All of these functions are bundled into what Samsung is calling the Revolving UX and Samsung has all sorts of things bundled into that, but there’s going to be an SDK available for developers to plug into the Edge Screen. However, for the majority of people it’s the clock and notification feature that’s going to be the best feature with the Note Edge being a nice glanceable display when laid on a table. Much like the Galaxy Note 4, the Note Edge features a refined design of the Galaxy Note 3, including a metal edge framing that soft-touch faux leather around the back.
As this is a Galaxy Note device, the Edge features the same sort of software as the Galaxy Note 4 with the same new S-Pen enhancements and vast changes to multi-window. Samsung didn’t spend long talking about the Galaxy Note Edge on stage, and they said it’ll be available in “selected markets” soon, but there’s no telling just what those markets are as of yet.
As this is a sort of sidekick to the Galaxy Note 4, the Note Edge has the same 16-megapixel rear-facing camera complete with smart OIS and a 3.7-megapixel front-facing camera with a sharp f/1.9 aperture with the same “Wide Selfie” mode that takes a panoramic shot of who you’re with. Powering all of this is a 2.7 Ghz Quad-Core Snapdragon 805 with 3GB of RAM as well as 16 or 32GB of expandable storage. Bluetooth 4.1, a fingerprint sensor, a hear-rate monitor, WiFi 802.11ac, LTE Cat6 and more are all jammed here as well. For those wondering about battery life, the Edge packs in a 3,000 mAh battery
