Sony Announces The Smartwatch 3 With Android Wear

13_Xperia_Z3_Tablet_Compact_SmartWatch Sony has just unveiled the new Sony Smartwatch 3, the first smartwatch from the Japanese company to run the Android Wear platform. While there were rumors and statements in the past that Sony would be putting out yet another smartwatch with their own in house software on board, they have decided to take a different approach this time and announced that the Smartwatch 3 will use Android Wear, opening it up for software updates that match Google’s time frames and give it similar functionality to the other already available options that run the smartwatch OS. It comes in a variety of colors, with white, black, pink, and yellow, and comes with an touted 2 days of battery life according to Sony.

The Smartwatch 3 has 4GB of built in storage and comes with a 320 x 320 resolution display, and a 420 mAh battery inside which is what will give it the two day battery life we talked about just a moment ago. Like all Sony products it will carry an IP rating for waterproofing and dust proofing, using an IP68 waterproof rating allowing you to wear it in any condition. The screen size is 1.6-inches, similar to what we see on already available Android Wear watches. It also sports a 1.2GHz quad-core processor on the inside, which should come in handy for use with the Walkman app that Sony plans to add to the watch for music functionality.

It’ll carry the lifelog functions and Sony apps that we have seen from the past Sony Smartwatch 2, and although they plan to add in the Walkman app at some point the watch itself does not carry an on-board speaker so music playback is handled through a Bluetooth headset. A companion remote control application will allow the user to change tracks, and presumably pause/play songs at their convenience, so they don’t have to manage those tasks through the headset or the phone. Since this is running Android Wear, that means voice functions like we have seen on the LG G Watch and the Gear Live. Cost wise consumers are looking at shelling out 229.99 euros, and is supposedly available in the Fall, which most likely means this month or next. For what it’s worth, the Smartwatch 3 is a step up from previous iterations, but the band and the frame certainly give it some hurdles when compared to other devices with a more premium look. Will you be picking up Sony’s Smartwatch 3?
