iFixit is known for taking things that look nice and shiny on the outside, and taking them apart to see just how easy it is to repair them should the need ever arise. While most people won’t be trying to repair their stuff on their own, there are individuals out there that have access to the stuff they’ll need to replace if the situation comes up, and the tools to accomplish such repair missions is as easy as reading the iFixit teardowns for that specific device as they usually tell you what they used, and provide links on where to acquire them. With that said, iFixit recently tore apart Google’s Project Tango Tablet,(you know, the 3D tracking tablet they showed off at Google I/O)and while this thing is a beast of machine when put together, it was just as much of a beast to repair according to iFixit. They gave it a score of 4 out of 10, with 10 being the easiest to repair. Now, that’s not the worst score we’ve seen from them mind you, but it isn’t the best either.
If you weren’t already aware of what Project Tango held on the inside for specifications, the most notable piece of hardware inside it is the Nvidia Tegra K1 CPU and the 4GB of RAM. With those tools at its disposal, the Tango tablet will have no problem running the most advanced mobile games, or running 3D tracking software, which is of course what it’s meant for, especially since these are dev kits and fairly expensive ones at that, they’re not meant for the average person looking for a gaming tablet.
The tablet also sports a 7-inch display with 1920 x 1200 resolution and 323 ppi, 128GB of internal storage and expandable options through microSD slot, and of course the 4MP rear facing IR-RGB camera with a 170 degree motion tracking camera. It even has 120 motion tracking camera on the front. As for the teardown, iFixit is able to get things done in all of about 21 different steps, not the shortest teardown we’ve seen from them. However if you were hoping to get your hands on one of these and wanted to know exactly how to take it apart should you need to ever replace anything, iFixit has come through and shown you the way.
