Xiaomi CEO: We’ll Unveil Our New Flagship Handset In January; Xiaomi Raised $1.1 Billion In Funding

Xiaomi is probably the fastest growing smartphone manufacturer in the world. This China-based OEM was founded back in 2010 and has since then grown into China’s number one smartphone manufacturer and 3rd o 4th biggest smartphone OEM in the world, which is commendable no matter which way you spin it. Xiaomi has sold around 60 million devices in 2014 and intends to raise that number to a 100 million units in 2015. That’s not all though, they intend to expand their business outside of Asia, to countries like India, Latin America and Russia, and in order to do that, the company needs cash, of course.

Xiaomi has been raising funds for a while now and the company has just announced that they raised $1.1 billion in a round of funding. The company is now valued at $45 billion. All of this was announced by Xiaomi’s CEO, Lei Jun, via social media. Xiaomi’s CEO also mentioned some of the company’s investors: All-Stars Investment, DST Global, Hopu Investment Management and Yunfeng Capital. “We will strive to continue bringing innovation to everyone, with a goal of producing high-quality, high-performance devices with great user experience,” said Lei Jun, and added the following: “In January 2015, we will be unveiling our next flagship device. Big thanks to all Mi fans, business partners and investors for your strong support”.

So not only did Xiaomi’s CEO announced that the company raised a ton of funding money, but he also announced that they’ll unveil their new flagship handset next month. We recently covered a report from China stating that Xiaomi will announce a new smartphone on January 15th, though we didn’t know which devices they’ll announce. Company’s CEO just confirmed that they will announce their next flagship in January, which is really odd considering that the Mi4 is only about 6 months old at this point. Considering the fact he used the term “flagship”, I guess we’ll see the Mi5 launched in January, and if the earlier report from China is correct, January 15th is the date.

I certainly did not expect Xiaomi to launch the Mi5 in January, but you won’t get a better confirmation than this. What do you think this device’s specifications will look like? I guess that the Snapdragon 810 is out of the question despite the fact it was rumored earlier, it’s a bit too early for that, but the Snapdragon 805 is definitely an option. 3GB of RAM will be on there as well I believe, and I expect Xiaomi to use a new and improved camera on there along with a QuadHD display and a metallic build. That’s only my guess though, we’ll see.
