The Galaxy Alpha handset was sort of a pioneer device for Samsung, this was the first Samsung-made smartphone which sported metal material in combination with plastic. The device was still designed in the traditional Samsung way though, the physical home button was there below the display and as far as the general looks go, not much has changed. The metallic trim around the device did bring a lot to the table though, the phone looks way better and feels a lot better in the hand as well. A couple more Samsung smartphones followed this handset in terms of design, like the Galaxy Note 4, Galaxy A5, Galaxy A3, even the Galaxy Note Edge, all of them had metallic trims as part of their design.
It seems like Samsung is getting ready to discontinue the Galaxy Alpha though, which is not all that surprising considering the fact that device’s price was way too high if you consider its specs. According to a report by ETNews from China, this Korean smartphone manufacturer will replace the Galaxy Alpha with the Galaxy A5 which will launch in South Korea in January / February. The report also states that the production of the Galaxy Alpha will stop as soon as the company runs out of material.
As I said, this is definitely not a surprise, at least not to me. The Galaxy Alpha was made to show off Samsung’s new design intents and to see how will the general public react, the reactions were great and Samsung (obviously) continued making such phones after the Galaxy Alpha. The Galaxy A5 is made on the Galaxy Alpha’s image and is somewhat cheaper than the Alpha, so this was to be expected. Both of these handsets sport 720p displays (which are similar in size), 2GB of RAM and Android 4.4 KitKat. Their processors and cameras are somewhat different, but all of this belongs in the upper mid-range category of smartphones, so I doubt many people will miss the Galaxy Alpha once Samsung decides to cut the cord.
