Uber just can’t seem to stay out of the press in a negative light. Just recently they were being sued over a driver in India that had allegedly raped a passenger, and even more recently news broke that they were being sued by multiple citities(for different reasons of course)including San Francisco, and by the city of Portland, Oregon for operating illegally after they were told by city officials they didn’t have approval to do so. The recent and latest news regarding Uber is that they’re apparently flooding people with text messages, drivers and customers included, according to Motherboard.
If there’s one thing people really hate when it comes to text messages, it’s spam. That seems to be exactly what Uber is doing to tons of individuals, spamming their inboxes with messages either regarding interest in a driver position or general promotion. The messages are said to be going to drivers, the friends of drivers, and customers, with one individual claiming they had received around 42 text messages from Uber within a two week period. According to the source and an Uber spokesperson, Uber themselves are not necessarily sending these messages out, rather drivers who work for Uber are sending them out to try and promote the business. It’s customary to receive a text message when your Uber ride arrives, and we completely understand that Uber may send out text messages to interested parties who may have at one point been looking to get hired on with Uber, but there is a fine line between promotion and aggressive tactics that will only alienate your potential employees and customers
One person states that they were once interested in an Uber job, but had decided to stop pursuing the position because they would no longer have access to the vehicle they would be using to operate. Even though they had sent out repeated attempts to stop the receipt of messages, they apparently still continued to flow in. Complaints are said to have been filed with the FTC reaching a total of 53 unique complaints, 14 of them being termed as “unsolicited spam.” Not all the complaints have been verified either, but it would definitely appear that this is a real issue that people are having.
