The wonderful world of reddit with all its quirks and random weird posts, may be closer to an official Android app than we think, as they have apparently just hired some people for the role of mobile engineer. Out of the seven that are now on board with the reddit team, one of them (David Forsythe) specializes in Android app development. Back in April reddit listed a job post that they were looking for a mobile engineer(s) to work on and improve the mobile experience of reddit, which many, ourselves included took to mean that they were potentially looking into finally developing an official reddit Android app. At this point in time it isn’t 100% clear whether or not the new mobile engineers will be performing the task of official reddit Android app development, but that is the indication it seems.
It would make sense for them to begin working on the official app for Android, as they had recently dropped the official Reddit AMA application which you can currently find in the play Store. That particular app is dedicated to a specific piece of reddit,the AMA section, which is to allow redditers to interact with celebrities, sports athletes, game developers, and all manner of people really by asking them any questions they wish and then having those responses answered by the people completing the AMA (the creators of Too Many Cooks recently did an AMA for example. Not sure what Too Many Cooks is? Google it, you might be pleasantly surprised).
With reddit having already started Android app development for the AMA side of things, it only stands to reason that they’d want to push forward and create their own official reddit app. You can already find a handful of third party applications out there on the Play Store, many of them very good, and reddit stated in the original job posting that part of the mobile engineer’s job would be to work closely with and help those third party app developers make their already existing apps better. It’s entirely possible that they may not be developing an official reddit app at all, but we’ll keep our fingers crossed that we’ll see something in the future. Nothing has been confirmed as of yet of course, so keep your eyes peeled. Do you already use a third party reddit app and if so, which one?
