New Mirror Beta App From Koush Utilizes No Root Screen Recording API For Lollipop

AH Mirror Beta-1

If you’re familiar with Koushik Dutta, chances are that you’ve used one or two of his apps at some point, with ClockworkMod likely being the app people are most familiar with. One of his latest apps(although not new)is Mirror, which allowed you to mirror your device’s display to a different monitor or TV screen, albeit with a few requirements for compatibility of course, like Root access on your device. His newest Mirror Beta is now up on the Play Store and available for download, which takes away the requirement of Root access for a very small group of people, those running Android 5.0 Lollipop.

The capability to get Mirror working for people without Root access is all thanks to the new API baked into Android 5.0 Lollipop, which we talked about briefly last week in regards to Lollipop having the ability to allow users a screen recording functionality without root. The feature isn’t a system useable function though, users still need to have an app installed that completes the screen recording task. The nice thing about Mirror is that now because of the new API’s in Android 5.0, Mirror will let you not only screencast your device display to another screen, be it TV or PC monitor, but also screen record for any reason that you’d want such a tool.

For those who have already been using Mirror, but are not on Android 5.0 Lollipop, you still need root access to use the application just like before, but now you gain the ability to record the screen on your device too which is a nifty little feature to have. Screen recording doesn’t produce the system audio, however it should take advantage of the mic audio, so you can still talk during a screen recording and have it show up in the video file. If you have a Nexus 5 running the latest preview build of Android 5.0 Lollipop, or are using a Nexus 6 or Nexus 9, give the Mirror beta a try and see how it works out. The app is pretty bare in terms of features, but do you really need tons of features with a tool like this? Let us know what you think of the Mirror beta and whether or not it worked for your needs?
