Now when I say to you “Philips” your first thought probably is not smartphones and even if it is (which it isn’t) it certainly won’t be Android. Yet Philips seems intent on trying to prove itself and make its mark in the Android sphere. Back in May of this year Philips launched a smartphone under the guise Philips I928. Never heard of it? No, thought not! However, it was released and as you can imagine did not sell so well. This did not come as much of a surprise when you consider the device was priced rather high (roughly $540) at launch in China. Since then it seems the price has already dropped significantly and can now be purchased for as little as $325.
After what can only be described as a rather uneventful launch-device it now seems Philips is preparing to release its next smartphone, the Philips Aurora I966. Will this smartphone fare any better? Who knows! Either way the rumors are suggesting it is close to a release. Now, the best way to determine the likely success of a device is its specs. However, again at the present moment this is rather difficult as very little details have been released. In fact, all we know for sure (and by sure – this means based on rumors) is that the device will be in the phablet range…and not on the small side. It seems the Aurora I966 will come with a screen somewhere between 5.5” and 6” (that’s how vague even the rumors are). Besides its size the only other noted quality (again solely based on rumours) is the device will run the custom interface, YunOS 3.0. It also suggested the I966 will also come equipped with dual-SIM compatibility along with the possibility of support for 4G LTE.
As far as the early rumors go this is about it. How much will it cost? No comment! When will it be released? Well it is (again) rumored the device is due to be launched at a special Philips event on October 20th. If this is true then it will only be a week or so before we find out the proper and correct details. In the meantime it is felt the need to once more to remind readers that the current details are highly based on rumors and as such can only be taken with some degree of truth. October 20th awaits.
