Sony officially releases perfume-esque selfie camera

Sony seems to have latched on to the concept of smartphones being used for selfies and sees it as a way to market devices. Last week we saw Sony move to start selling their “selfie-centric” Sony Xperia C3 smartphone in Russia. We also saw a bizarre looking device that had the distinct appearance of a perfume bottle that we eventually determined was a camera. That device turns out to be the Sony DSC-KW1 and it is a real thing.

The KW1 does look like a perfume bottle and this was apparently done on purpose. Apparently in China, one of the fads going around amongst female smartphone users is to decorate their devices to look like perfume bottles – Chanel in particular. Sony’s latest device appears to try to capitalize on that by giving it that look out of the box.

As far as specifications, the KW1 comes with a 3.3-inch OLED display to go with a 19.2 MP camera. The camera is equipped with a 21mm f2.0 lens that can be rotated 180 degrees. To help get pictures snapped with the KW1 out on the Internet, Sony has equipped the device with WiFi and NFC capabilities for easy transfer of files to something that does have an Internet connection. Pricing has been set at 5,199 yuan ($844 USD). Sony is currently taking pre-orders on their Chinese market site and indicate delivery is expected by the end of September. The KW1 is available in white, pink, green and purple.
