While most industry experts prefer a market with healthy competition, it’s hard to deny Android is winning most battles in the mobile wars. Huawei stays relatively quiet, but it seems they know their business and aren’t afraid to tell it like it is when hit by the spotlight.
Huawei director and CEO of the Consumer BG Richard Yu recently announced the Chinese manufacturer’s plans for the near future and it seems they are going all in on Android. While their Windows Phone devices have proven to be great options, they have been losing money on them for 2 years, forcing them to put any new releases “on hold”.
“We have tried using the Windows Phone OS. But it has been difficult to persuade consumers to buy a Windows phone.”
The next obvious option would be to work with Tizen, but Huawei seems to have very little faith in Samsung’s ability to turn its mobile OS into a success. Do we agree? Samsung is definitely a force to be reckoned with, but it’s hard to see an operating system taking on two well-established platforms like iOS and Android.
Regardless of how the big picture develops, though, it makes sense for Huawei to play their safe cards with Android. Even if we assumed Tizen or Windows Phone have a profitable future, the money simply isn’t there for a small manufacturer like Huawei. At least not yet.
In comparison, HTC is taking a leap of faith on Windows Phone by releasing an HTC One M8 for Windows. Nevertheless, the Taiwanese manufacturer does have much less of a risk. Especially considering all they did was re-program hardware they already have in production.
