Very early this morning we reported on the news of LG’s first teaser for its next Android Wear smartwatch, which will feature a rounded design somewhat similar to the Moto 360. Now a new report from SamMobile claims that Samsung is getting ready to get into the round smartwatch game as well.
Honestly, this doesn’t come as much of a surprise. First, Moto 360 has sparked a lot of interest in the rounded watch form factor, despite the fact it still isn’t commercially available. Second, Samsung already has several patents for rounded smartwatch designs and so actually building a rounded watch is just the next logical step forward.
What’s less clear is what platform the new watch will run on. Samsung’s current watches either run on Tizen (Gear 2 family, and OG Galaxy Gear upgraded), or Android Wear (Gear Live). That said, considering Samsung is no stranger to releasing as many variants as possible with its devices, we could end up seeing a version than runs Tizen and another that opts for Android Wear.
So when can we expect the rounded Gear watch? SamMobile’s sources were pretty sparing with details at this point, but it isn’t expected to debut until sometime after the Note 4. Perhaps Samsung will end up releasing the device during the first half of 2015, alongside the Galaxy S6? Of course that’s really just speculation at this point.
what do you think, excited by the idea of a rounded Gear watch or not? What would Samsung need to do to lure you to their offering as opposed to the Moto 360 or the rounded G Watch?
