Yesterday we saw where Samsung had quietly slipped the Samsung Galaxy Alpha in as a sponsor for a yachting regatta in Moscow. Today, more images of the device have surfaced thanks to a Russian source. One of the interesting shots shows the results of an AnTuTu benchmark run on the device that puts it above the HTC One (M8) and the Samsung Galaxy S5. While an Exynos 5 octa-core processor that supposedly powers the device helps, much of the performance gain could be due to the lower resolution screen of the Galaxy Alpha. This frees up the processor for other chores outside of producing graphics and makes a strong case for full HD screens being overkill on devices like smartphones that have small displays.
Outside of the screenshot of a benchmark test, the images are consistent with previously leaked photos of the Galaxy Alpha showing apparent inspiration from Apple.
According to sources in the Netherlands, the device is expected to be available for purchase there starting in September for at least €500 ($668 USD). Other reports from the U.K. have pegged the price at €700 ($935 USD). Samsung is anticipated to make an official announcement about the Galaxy Alpha tomorrow. However, pricing and availability information may not be released until later, possibly at IFA 2014 in Berlin.
