LG Ships 14.5 Million Smartphones in Q2; Praises the G3′s Success

LG-G3-AH-10

Over the last couple of years, there’s been a new name to watch in the Android space, and that’s Samsung’s arch-rival, LG. With the release of the Optimus G, and the Nexus 4 of course, LG proved they had something more than wonky software and good hardware to offer customers. They perfected this with the release of the G2, which is still an excellent device, but their recent flagship – the G3 – has helped them reach newfound success in the mobile arena, posting their best figures since 2010. The company has just released their earnings for Q2 of 2014, and the results are not only surprising, but downright impressive.

In Q2 of this year, LG shipped 14.5 Million smartphones, which is a record-breaking figure for the South Korean giant, with one-third of those devices being of the LTE variety as well. Of course, these are shipments and not sales, but if there’s no demand for a product then you’re obviously not going to be shipping anywhere near those sort of figures. The company has been praising the success of the G3 in their home market of South Korea, but there’s also other successes for LG. It’s just not super-slim bezels and retina-busting displays LG is good at, as their budget-offerings with their L-range of products have been doing well, too.

It’s not neccesarily surprising to see LG posting such high figures when we think about how good a device the G3 is, but it is surprising to say how stiff competition is in the mobile market. Samsung is still flying high and selling more than anyone, and Apple continues to ship high volumes, so it’s surprising to see LG, a firm that had people worried about the Nexus 4 ship such a record-breaking figure. It’ll be interesting to see what happens in their Q3 results later in the year, as these will contain sales figures for the G3 here in the US as well.
