Google Updates Their Keyboard App, Gives The Voice Typing Button A New Home

AH Google Logo Colored 1.5

The Google Keyboard has come a long way since a couple of Android OS versions ago. Once they began to implement the gesture typing it began to pick up steam and it greatly improved. Plenty of people are probably experimenting with the Android L keyboard right now or may be sticking to their favorite third party keyboard apps like Fleksy, and Swiftkey. For those still on the Google Keyboard though, the latest update should be including the usual improvements and bug fixes and at least one minor change that should prove to be useful. In fact, the change even mimics the Android L keyboard just a little bit.

The noticeable change here is that Google has actually altered the location of the voice typing button in the latest Google Keyboard update. The version that you should be looking for on your device just in case you’re in question of whether or not you had actually received the update is version 3.1.19. Once the keyboard updates you’ll notice that the voice typing button actually has a home right above the letter “P” just as it does in the new Android L keyboard as you can see in the image below. The button actually sits in the word prediction bar at the very end, which seems like a fitting place for it to be.

Now with this change if someone wants to open up a message or an email and shoot a quick reply using the voice typing function, there is a button they can tap for immediate access which makes using it from the Google Keyboard much easier than before. Prior to now the voice typing button was next to the space bar but in its new location there is less to get in its way and it feels more natural sitting up higher if you’re someone who uses it. If you never use voice typing then you likely won’t get much from this change. Most of Google’s apps get their updates on Wednesday which we saw plenty of, but it seems the keyboard took its own sweet time since we’re seeing it get an update today instead. Near as we can tell the voice typing button getting moved is the only visible change and as far as fixes or improvements go things feel like they work just the same.
