Android How To: Install Android L on the Nexus 7 2012

AH Android L Logo

I’m sure many of you out there with the Nexus 7 2012, is chomping at the bits to get your hands on Android L for your tablet. Since Google only released the preview for the Nexus 7 2013 and the Nexus 5. Now that Google has released the code into AOSP for the Nexus devices, we now have some ROMs available for flashing onto the Nexus 7 2012. This is an unofficial port, so there are likely to be some bugs in here somewhere. Make sure you download the ROM here, and the Gapps as well. Now before we get started, you’ll need to unlock your bootloader as well as rooted with a custom recovery. Personally, I use TWRP as my custom Recovery, but CWM will work as well.

  1. Place both the ROM and Gapps onto your internal storage

  2. Reboot into recovery

  3. Tap on Install

  4. Choose the ROM file

  5. Tap on Add more Files

  6. Now choose the Gapps file

  7. Slide over to flash

  8. Once those are done flashing, make sure you do a factory reset before rebooting

  9. Also clear Cache

  10. Now reboot

It may take a little bit to reboot as it is a new ROM and it needs to build up the cache and such while it’s booting up. So if it takes longer than usual to get it booted up, don’t panic yet. Also remember that this is a port of a developer preview. So it’s no where near final software. So if you’re using your tablet everyday for work or something I wouldn’t recommend flashing this ROM as it may cause more issues than it’s worth. But if you’re a developer and looking to play around with Android L and getting your apps ready for the fall, then have at it.

How many of you are as excited about Android L as we are? Let us know in the comments below.
