Samsung’s brand new Galaxy Tab S features a gorgeous Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 2560×1600, coming in either 8.4 or 10.5-inch sizes. After spending some hands on time with it, one this is clear: the display is incredible. So after receiving so much praise about just how good the display on the Galaxy Tab S is, Samsung decided to reveal the magic behind it.
Super AMOLED displays have always been favored by Samsung while other manufacturers lean towards LCD displays. LCD display require more work to produce colors because they require color filters, a backlight, and a light diffuser. The biggest drain for an LCD display is its backlight since it is always on. The Super AMOLED display consumes less power because it has no blockage and need for a backlight to push colors. Less work, better battery life.
The company also touts the contrast of its Super AMOLED display on the Galaxy Tab S. Specifically, Samsung believes it stays true to colors with blacker blacks and whiter whites. Its display also covers 90% of the AdobeRGB color spectrum compared to 70% with LCD displays. How can Samsung do this? By literally turning off pixels. This allows more shadows and detail to be shown in images with high contrast.
Since Super AMOLED displays are so rich and vibrant, you should have no issues taking the Galaxy Tab S outdoors. The display is less reflective, too. The Adaptive Display technology tailors the viewing experience for the environment’s conditions and the content being displayed. With a lot of text, the display will focus on crispness for the font and softness for the background. The Galaxy Tab S will find the optimal design.
