Nest Announces New “Works With Nest” API

Nest, a Google owned company, announced their new “Works with Nest” API today. This API is meant to allow other products from IFTTT, Jawbone, LIFX, Logitech, Mercedes-Benz, Whirlpool, Chamberlain and Google to communicate with Nest’s Learning Thermostat, and Nest Protect.

Google bought Nest for 3.2 billion dollars at the beginning of 2014. Nest’s purchase at the time was seen as Google’s way of getting into the smart home business. Google has already taken steps toward this goal by putting both the Learning Thermostat and Nest Protect on sale in the devices section of the Google Play Store. Another possible reason Google purchased Nest is to acquire the companies CEO, Tony Fadell, a former Apple employee and creator of the iPod.

Nest’s Learning Thermostat is a smart thermostat that can learn your schedule and change the temperature based on when you are home or away. The temperature can even be adjusted on the fly with your smartphone, and Nest’s app. These features help the Learning Thermostat save you money.

The Nest Protect is a smart smoke alarm and CO detector. Nest Protect offers many features over regular smoke alarms, including a “Heads-Up” early warning, battery monitoring, “What To Do” emergency plan, smartphone/tablet notifications and lots more. The devices keeps you protected without you having to worry about it.

Nest’s new API is suppose to provide third-party support to the aforementioned companies’ products. For example, if you own a Logitech Harmony remote, you could use it to change the temperature in your home. Another example uses the away mode on your Learning Thermostat to turn your LIFX products on, making it look as if you are home. Nest’s products will even work with Google Now in the future. These examples are just the beginning of what Nest’s new API is capable of.

According to Nest’s co-founder and engineer Matt Rodgers, Nest’s API will be platform agnostic, working with Android and iOS. He is quoted as saying;

“The home shouldn’t be a platform war. We’re going to be neutral. Switzerland.”

He claims the same set of features will be offered on both platforms, which is good to hear because Android doesn’t always get the same quality treatment as iOS.
