Google won’t allow OEM skinning with Android Wear, Android TV, and Android Auto

We all know that Android phones and tablets get skinned to death from various manufacturers, but is looks like that won’t be the case for Android Wear smartwatches, Android TV, and Android Auto. In a sense, these devices will be Google Play Edition devices, although they won’t be referred to as such. The best part of all this is that no matter which brand you pick up, it will behave exactly the same other than some very minor things.

For example, the smartwatches may differ slightly. Some might offer a heart rate sensor, like the Samsung Gear Live. Of course, that is hardware, but what about software? So far, the only thing we can tell that differs from manufacturer to manufacturer are the watch faces. Most of the watch faces are stock from Google, but each OEM does offer a few of their own in addition. That shouldn’t matter so much down the road as developers will hopefully be able to design faces.

As to Android TV and Android Auto, we don’t have any examples yet to know what slight differences might exist, but it will be minimal.

If only Android phones and tablets could be like this. I can dream can’t I?
