Some of you may already be enjoying the benefits of the new Android L keyboard that has been available since the day after the Android L preview announcement, while others may be more engaged with the quick replies made possible by the Google Now interface on the LG G Watch or the Samsung Gear Live. What if you actually want to type out your responses though instead of speak what you’re trying to say? While stand alone apps are pretty much non existent within the Android Wear ecosystem, that will change with time. A third party keyboard application on the Play Store for Android devices looks like it could prove to be of some benefit to those using the Android Wear smartwatches and are looking for a way to actually type out their words.
The app is called Flickkey keyboard and like most third party keyboards it has its own little niche that seeks to draw in users. With Flickkey, the claim is that it is much more reliable to flick and drag your finger on a large key than it is to tap your finger on a very small key. Most of the third party keyboards on Android are actually pretty advanced and work extremely well regardless of the small buttons, Swiftkey and Fleksy, as well as the Google and Android L keyboards to name a few. On a smaller screen like on that of an Android Wear smartwatch however, Flickkey might actually be a handy app to have around.
Watch the video below for the full demonstration of how it works and to see it in action, but the basis is that you have your keyboard keys split up into six large buttons,(quadrants)and you simply touch and drag(flick)your finger on a button and in the direction of the key that you want to hit. Throw in word predictions and this could make the possibility of typing on Android Wear’s smaller screens fairly easy. With some practice of course. I personally find the voice typing within Android Wear the absolute easiest, and from personal experience it has been 100% reliable thus far with no mistakes. If you prefer to type the old fashioned way though, you may want to acquaint yourself with Flickkey.
