Amazon Decommission Test Drive Service For Apps Listed On The Amazon Appstore

When it comes to android apps, there are probably only two places the majority of android device owners go to get their next app. The first is Google’s own Play Store. This is people’s first and more often visited app store for android and it is not surprising. The Play Store contains more android apps than any other app store (including Apple’s App Store) and usually contains the most up to date versions of the apps. That said, there is also Amazon’s offering, the Amazon Appstore. Although, in terms of number of apps, Amazon’s Appstore pales into insignificance compared to the Play Store, it still is a viable app store in its own right,

In fact, a number of users specifically user the Amazon Appstore for specific features which are unique to Amazon’s offering. Probably, the most obvious one is Amazon’s Free App Of The Day (FOTD) promotion. For those, who have still not used this, in short, Amazon offers their users a premium (paid) app for free, every day. The app changes each day and costs nothing to download during that twenty four hour period. Not to mention, they are often giving away a ton of apps in their regular free app bundles. Another interesting feature which Amazon launched back in 2011 was the ‘Test Drive’ feature. This allowed users to effectively try an app before they buy the app. The Test Drive option utilized the browser to show how an app looks, performs and its content, offering users a quick peek before handing over their money.

Well, if you were one of those who had been using the Test Drive feature, Amazon have now announced the closure of the program. One of the reasons given for the decommissioning of Test Drive was that adoption rate by users had declined too much in recent times. This was stated in the blog announcement (source link below) to be partly due to rise in “free-to-play” games where you can effectively download and test drive the game (or app) in a real life situation, compared to Amazon’s in-browser testing. Either way, the program has now ended and apps which were part of the test drive program will still be available, although their test driving feature will not to be. Not to mention, they will not be accepting submissions from developers for new apps to enroll in the program
