Fans of the VLC media player on Android have been waiting for the app to incorporate support for streaming to Chromecast devices for some time now. Interest ratcheted up earlier this month when some changes in the VLC source code for the upcoming version 3.0 release indicated support for Chromecast was present. VideoLabs has released an update for the app, but it is still not the one everyone was hoping for that would include the casting capability. The good news is that it does include support for Android TV.
According to the apps notes in the Google Play Store, the Android TV support includes the ability to do an audio search using your mobile device. The app also includes a connector so the app can recognize when an Android TV device has completed booting and then send recommendations to the Android TV launcher screen.
While the addition of the Android TV support is nice, this still does not guarantee Android devices will be the first to get casting support for VLC. The iOS or desktop versions of VLC are in the running as well. If you want to grab VLC, hit one of the download links below to see if you can install it on your device.
