Report: Samsung To Challenge Qualcomm With Its More Advanced 14nm Technology

Exynos and Snapdragon AH

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chips are widely acclaimed in the mobile industry nowadays. These mobile SoCs offer great performance and many manufacturers use them in their devices, no matter if we talk about budget-friendly phones, or the higher-end ones. There are other SoC manufacturers which are trying to compete with Qualcomm though, like a Chinese company MediaTek for example. MediaTek is nowhere near Qualcomm at this point though, but they’re not the only threat though, Samsung and Huawei make their own SoCs (Exynos and Kirin, respectively), same goes for LG.

You may recall that recent reports were claiming that Samsung might axe Snapdragon 810 in favor of their very own Exynos chip as far as the Galaxy S6 goes, allegedly because Qualcomm’s newest chip has overheating issues. Well, LG has denied such claims by Samsung and claims that the chip performs fine in their G Flex 2 handset. Well, overheating might not be the reason behind Samsung’s claims, at least according to the newest report from Korea, which states that Samsung wants to go head-to-head with Qualcomm by using their 14nm manufacturing process. As a reminder, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 chip is built using the 20nm manufacturing process.

The source goes on explaining that both Exynos 7420 and Snapdragon 810 are already making their way to the market (or will soon), and that Samsung’s Exynos chips are finally ready for primetime after some overheating issues with the Exynos 5 series, because of which Samsung was releasing 2 versions of their devices or using other manufacturer’s chips (depending on the device) in the past. What does this 14nm manufacturing process means? Well, it should mean less power consumption and a smaller processor footprint, but we’ll see how these two chips perform side-by-side really soon.

Do you think that Samsung will once again release both the Exynos and Snapdragon versions of their Galaxy S handset, or will they deploy only the Exynos SoC in the Galaxy S6? Let us know what you think in the comments, we’d love to hear from you, as usual.
